### 2014-12-18

The Free Post, a new web site for free software community stuffs.

### 2014-12-14 I have heard over and over again about Dolphin-Safe tuna, but I never really knew what it meant so I looked it up at NOAA. I found two interesting articles, one on dolphin-safe tuna in general and the other relating more to the history of fishing for tuna

### 2014-12-11 Uber vs Portland. I think Novick has a point that if Uber has a problem with the rules the company should have presented this to the city rather than risk suit. On the other hand, bad press still means press therefore good press… But if so, that means Uber has used the City of Portland as an ad campaign. Not that I had much here, but I have finished migrating nan to unobtrusive javascript. On a similar topic, I still have a handful of style attributes, but only for the purpose of hiding elements that no one should see if CSS ever goes missing.

### 2014-12-06 The AFT local GTFF 3544 at the University of Oregon has a petition to ask for sick days for their workers. The workers have gone on strike. According to this petition on Watchdog, some cities have outlawed some forms of giving. I know not the whole story, but it makes me think we should never forget Lincoln's words, \"With malice toward none, with charity for all.\" A person on a listserve I get mentioned Africa Bridge

### 2014-12-02 Wandboard looks interesting. Librem 15 A Free-Libre Software Laptop That Respects Your Essential Freedoms BIOS Freedom Status

### 2014-11-30 Johnny H. Nguyen took the photo of Sgt. Barnum and Devonte Hart.

### 2014-11-29 I made biscuits last night. Orfos recently had a croudsource campaign for their premiere lamp set. Made in the US.

### 2014-11-27 \"Scrutiny is the only way for police to learn from their most tragic encounters, Gebhardt said,\" a former police sergeant and lieutenant with six years of SWAT experience. Though from The Salt Lake Tribune article by Erin Alberty I cannot tell if I quote Gebhardt or the paraphrasation. Either way, the article gives a good set of facts and some people's opinions. But it does not completely discuss the process of finding the answers. Even under the scrutiny that Gebhart endorces, the root problems might not lie with officers, the academy, or with the other people in the conflicts, but with something or someone else. The logical way to investigate any problem, whether scientific or legal matters, looks at the most likely parties first and to make conclusions based on facts and rational thought. To exempt anyone from the process based on honor instead of logic, fails to do justice. The only honor in justice exists because we have duty to carry it out, but when it comes to executing justice, we only need logic.

### 2014-11-23 After finishing my first project in OpenShot, I think I like KDEnlive better. Next time I'll go back to that. I tried to user Windows Movie Maker on my wife's computer but the developers have simplified it so much that I do not understand how it works. Back to OpenShot.

### 2014-11-21 RIP Kirke Johnson. Thank you for letting me know you when I did. You were the one who originally got me to sign up for the BTA, just so you know. I'll keep riding.

### 2014-11-16 \"Although I have the right to remain stupid, I try not to abuse that right\" - found on several DYI websites, such as here by whitedogstr8leg

### 2014-11-13 According to NuGet's license, it restricts users from \"work[ing] around any technical limitations in the software\" and also tells users they shall not expect the developers to \"provide support services for it\". I find that sad because it means that even though NuGet supports free software, it has handcuffs. My coworker showed me Bifrost from the NASA apod, though he might not have known it. A CASE data object defined by Longjump. I started a directory for Hello World programs.

### 2014-11-04 Rampaged Reality has a picture of Samus Aran exploding Chozo suit. EOL Robot Band I know it seems like a longshot, but I started working on factoring RSA-220. BitSet.h A historian friend of mine told me about Buffalo Calf Road Woman

### 2014-10-18 User WJM51 suggests the analogue of the death penalty for corporations. That idea amuses me, even if corporations do not or did not have personhood. Other users suggest treason, facism, or cronyism. The article itself links to Sourcewatch's Outsourcing America Exposed

### 2014-10-12 Did the Vikings Get a Bum Rap? A Yale historian wants us to rethink the terrible tales about the Norse. One thing I want to reiterate, I do not go so far to stress using terms such as Scandinavian, because even that probably came from exonym. Thankfully, the article seems to oppose other terms such as "Nazis of the North" which only promote ignorance or racism.

### 2014-10-11 My question for today, does using computers and datacenters have a significantly less impact on the environment, such as carbon footprint or chemical production waste from computer production versus paper making? Hemphasis article from 2004 Why hemp paper? I thought wood was best. gives paper production kilowatt energy metrics as well as interesting trivia such as "The Gutenberg Bible, Thomas Paine's pamphlets, and the novels of Mark Twain were all printed on hemp paper. Both the U.S. Constitution and the Declaration of Independence were drafted on hemp, and then copied onto parchment." Eco-Libris suggests planting a tree for every book you read, though at the time I read this today their service for this went down. Nancy Davis Kho of the SFGate asked in 2011, E-readers or print books - which is greener?, of which she and Eco-Libris cross-reference each other. Obvious conclusion, use the library. I still wonder, what about buying used books or buying a used computer or nerfed computer such as a tablet? ebooks vs. paper books, a list of information compiled on Eco-Libris. Computer- vs. paper-based tasks: Are they equivalent? by Jan M. Noyes and Kate J. Garland, 2008. They discuss psychological differences.

### 2014-10-08 I found an interesting reference on Unconstitutional Official Acts in my ongoing quest to find misnomers and oxymorons. The article suggests that unconstitutional law represents a misnomer and we should call them unconstitutional acts, instead. But who decides what constitutes an unconstitutional act? The article suggests that courts do not have the final say and even goes so far to put the responsibility upon "the militia". Heavy stuff.

### 2014-10-07 A blogger on Washington Post asked how much math do students need? Without getting too much into the debate, personally, the followup comments add some good points. But I will say that I think everyone should know calculus, even if they struggle with it. A group called WasteAid "connects vulnerable communities to waste management resources and expertise" Conrad Weisert from IDI reenforces my own opinions about why or at least when to not use getters and setters

### 2014-10-05 Spectral Workbench and Public Lab I found an interesting discussion on static methods. I would add that using static methods seems more like procedural programming, or rather a procedure not a method. But I do not think of these as exactly global because the namespace controls access. Specifically, everything in object oriented programming belongs to a set. The only way to have a global object would be to have an all inclusive superset. But to me that does not make sense for OO. Danishnet has an article on longships. Oh, and Lord Shaggypants. I dislike when in English, people use the word as to mean because or but. The word as already has its own ambigutiy of as-a or as-when. But then looking up the etymology of as I read that it means also or because. So my opinions seem nullified. Maybe I just dislike the word.

echo $blogentry." Interesting slide deck on the carbon footprint of food by Robert A. Kluson, Ph.D, of UF/IFAS. RMS calls the Pseudo-Islamic State in Syria and Iraq by the name of PISSI. Have you ever made a recent, but not immediate git commit that you wanted to rebase and then force push that change to a remote? This comment states GNU recommends TeX, but I think that recommendation in context with the comment has gone stale by about 24 years. See groff along with or instead of TeX or nroff.

### 2014-09-28 Day two of the Guix hackathon. I surfed around and found Viking recipes
