Summary

Every so often I reinstall everything. This re-installation took a lot more work because either I failed to harden some of my builds or because I waited too long to upgrade.

Notes

These are my general notes.

I always forget the dd step to use status=progress. Sometimes I use bs=4M but this time I did not.

df -h
sudo dd status=progress of=/dev/sdn if=hello-whatever-I-downloaded.iso
sudo dd bs=4M status=progress of=/dev/sdn if=hello-whatever-I-downloaded.iso

After installing I ran into an issue with the clock. I feel like I have not had to do this in forever.

sudo timedatectl set-time "2026-09-19 14:30:00"

And then I realised I didn't have the service installed.

systemctl status systemd-timesyncd
sudo apt update && sudo apt install systemd-timesyncd

Usual issues with permissions: https://superuser.com/questions/954509/what-are-the-correct-permissions-for-the-gnupg-enclosing-folder-gpg-warning#954536 https://www.tecmint.com/set-ssh-directory-permissions-in-linux/

And then I remembered I did all this before in my ops subdirectory.

Skipped from apt:

Moved into apt:

Removed from general ops and development:

And replaced with:

There were somm minor changes to the helm package (I just removed helm-config for now).

Manually changed the terminal size to 130x24 typeface 10.

For rust and docker, some of these are in apt now, but I decided against them:

Zola

This gets its own section.

This blog post originally started in September, and for the system it was fine. But for the websites, it broken many things. I installed zola 0.23.6, which had many breaking changes compared to the version I was using previously. The documentation on the getzola website at the time of this writing is 0.19.1. Though the documentation for tera seems to be better than the last time I checked at all.

In addition to that, but unrelated, I had to deal with some hosting problems in October. And now it is November.

So it has obviously taken me a while to address some of the breaking changes, mainly in tera the templating engine, not zola specifically. I think I finally have my website upgraded. So I will get that ready and deploy the changes.

I should probably explicate the build version required and also make some tests, probably grep commands, to verify some templating features are correct after building. At the moment, all I have is the non-failing build and review of a few pages. So it might be the case that some pages are broken. I assume the broken parts will primarily be links or dates.
